SOLUTION for A TRADE SYSTEM
Please read this very carfully, as it is NOT another version of the "I want an Auctionhouse"-post, I actually want to bring a solution.
First of all :
- I've spent some time reading the posts and suggestions about auctionhouses, player-owned-stores, etc.
- I understood that there could be no auctionhouse because of the database structure
- I am aware of the Auctions option of this site and in no way want to offend anyone working/colaborating on this site.
- I've played the game for almost 3 years and definitely agree that there is a need for a better buy/sell/trade system
This being said, I'm a student "multi-media design" from Belgium. I've carefully looked at the Auctions tab at this site and I must say it could use some improvement. I'm willing to discuss this further but for now I'm going for "some improvement".
Also I think it would be useful to integrate some sort of price system that records all transactions and calculates an average price.
Don't get me wrong on this, I don't want to criticize your work as I think this site is a great initiative. I actually want to develop this trade-application.
This is how I see it:
1) Their will be a distinction between auctions and sales:
- sales: if you need an item or want to sell an item for a set price with an option for normal price or price +
E.G:
WTB ... Axe 2,000g (I want to buy a ... axe for 2,000g and no more)
WTB ... Axe 2,000g+ (I want to buy a ... axe for 2,000g but I'm willing to pay more)
same for Selling
- auctions: let other players bid on your item
The Sales will be for regular/cheaper items and the Auctions will be for more expensive items.
This way if you really need an item or want to sell common items, you don't need to go spamming in Kamadan/LA/KC, you can just browse throuhg all the items and if you find someone selling/buying the item you need/have you can pm him in-game.
2) Prices will be recorded
- All sales will last for one week and will then be removed if not sold/bought.
- If you have sold/bought your item, you will have to close your sale and with it state the actual price you payed/got.
This way we can produce an actual price-guide which is up to date.
Further we will try to make it as simple as possible to create a "sale" or auction and make it as easy as possible to find the items you need.
So in conclusion:
- The goal of this application is to take away at least some of the spamming in-game as well as creating an easy buy/sell/trade environment.
- I want to make this application for free, but it will take some time.
- It will be a project for school, but I haven't got the "green light" because I have to make a study first to prove the necessity of the application, etc.
/signed if you feel like this could work or is an acceptable solution
/killDeepfish if you think I'm wasting my time
NOTE: This is just a rough idea, this is not a complete discription
Also feel free to add suggestions or to notify me if such a post has been made in the past
cheers

Just wondering what would stop the community from entering a price much higher than the item was sold at... or trading a rare item 100 times back and forth between a friend or ten to artificially inflate the items rarity?

That's a fine remark, and exactely why I posted this. I can't think about everything yet, so if you can point out possible weaknesses we can try to find a solution for them while working on it. As I said before: this is not a complete worked out project, just a rough idea.

/signed but will almost certainly not happen due to the huge effort it would take and the relatively small amount of time until gw2 comes out

Mate you get a /signed² just for the fact that you took the time to gather information and post a nice and detailed suggestion.
As for concerns:
- As mentioned, pushing prices by selling them multiple times between friends
- Same goes for lowering prices to buy cheap till the price gets back up.
Do you want this to be an executable application or a web-based environment?
If web-based you might be good with some moderation of experienced traders to make sure nobody tries to manipulate prices by pushing.
Hell I'll /sign this again!

have like a time buffer so that once u buy something you cant sell it in the next 24-48hours etc. Also i suppose data of buyer/seller is also recorder, so trades between 2-3 acounts of the same item(all items have a special reference number) will be removed form the final results. not sure but just a rough idea of what could be done

We've been asking for a better system for years and your post is much better than almost all "We need an auction house!" threads; however, I'm not sure what you meant by the part I quoted you on.
Are you talking about a system-wide board, or just in major cities, or what? If it's sytem-wide, then take in to account all the WTS/WTB threads just on Guru, per day! In a matter of hours, there are numerous pages in each section due to bumps and new threads...
If it's just in major cities, are the players leaving the respective city after posting...or spamming other items still?
Is there a limit to the number of posts a player can have? Will items be sorted by main weapon, i.e. Axe, Bow, etc.?
Any implementation of a new system won't be a simple task and I don't see it happening in GW anytime soon.
/signed for a better system...there has to be one someday...

I forgot to mention that it will be a web application, nothing executable and certainly not integrated in the game.

/signed because you're one of the few people who actualy thinks before they post their suggestion.
Although I'd like to point out that several people could easily destroy your "average price calculator" by trading/posting a certain item for a rediculous price and repeating themalves over and over to artificialy inflate/deflate its price.
